I think a field school experience unearths emotional connection with theory, literature, documentation, and news. It clearly exposes the pieces of tension that a book or PowerPoint cannot do. It also creates the space to establish bonds with people in a way a classroom setting cannot. Bonds with colleagues / classmates and the people in the community.
