Criminalization of Maria Cuc Choc
Maria Choc is sister-in-law of Adolfo Ich, land and Indigenous rights defender killed in 2009 while denouncing mining related harms and violations. She is sister of Angelica Choc, widow of Adolfo Ich, now leading civil law cases in Canada for the death of her husband, and other mining repression. And, Maria is the sister of Ramiro Choc, who spent 6 years in jail as a political prisoner – criminalized on malicious charges for his land and rights defense work.
Since 2018, Maria has been forced to respond to malicious criminal charges filed against her for courageous work in defense of indigenous rights, culture and lands. Rights Action continues to support her legal-political struggle to have the malicious charges dropped, and all the conditional-release limitations ended.
