May 2023 Guatemala Field School with UNB

Next May, join Professor Catherine Nolin & Grahame Russell of Rights Action in a UNBC field school to Guatemala. Grahame and Catherine have worked together since 2004 to organize and facilitate these experiential learning opportunities in Guatemala, and also recently co-edited and co-wrote several sections of their new book Testimonio: Canadian Mining in the Aftermath of Genocides in Guatemala (2021).

This field school is for UNBC students as well as students at universities across Canada (and possibly in the U.S.) – both senior undergraduates and graduate students.

The course will facilitate non-UNBC student participation via Zoom in the weeks leading up to a 2 week trip to Guatemala.

Testimonio: Canadian Mining in the Aftermath of Genocides in Guatemala
Between the Lines, 2021

Testimonio draws on over 30 years of direct community support work and community-based research in Guatemala to expose the repressive, corrupt state machinery that benefits the Canadian-led, global mining industry—a profitable juggernaut of exploitation, sanctioned and supported at every step by the Guatemala government and its ‘international community’ partner governments, companies and banks.

The trip will visit some communities profiled in Testimonio among others.

“What is land? A resource to be exploited? A commodity to be traded? A home to cherish? In Guatemala, a country still reeling from 36 years of US-backed repression and genocides, the Canadian-led, global mining industry cashes in, while acting with near-total impunity.”
