Aircrete Construction Course: Tierra del Sol Agroecological Center

Oaxaca, México
November 29-December 8, 2023

May workshop, Tierra del Sol, Oaxaca, México

Current aircrete dome constructions at Tierra del Sol

Join us at Tierra del Sol, to learn about working with the construction material, aircrete. Working as a team, using hands-on learning, we will build an aircrete dome—a prototype seed bank which will be promoted in local indigenous communities, an important step away from agro-industrial agriculture towards food sovereignty.

Why aircrete?  Construction with aircrete offers a building method that is more economical, sustainable, durable and comfortable than conventional construction. Aircrete bricks are made by injecting air into the concrete while mixing it—which expands its volume at least 5 times. Aircrete bricks are lightweight (they float), with excellent thermal and acoustic isolation. They are resistant to fire, humidity and to insects such as termites. With these aircrete bricks, we can build domes which are an excellent construction solution in areas prone to earthquakes, fires, hurricanes and other (not so) natural disasters—domes are perhaps the most stable structures that exist.

Tierra del Sol Agroecological Center: A place for cultivating awareness, learning and practice around themes of healthy food, ecological restauration and environmental education. Tierra del Sol is located near San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya, 30 minutes from Oaxaca City, México.

Cost: US$900.00 for 10-day workshop, including comfortable, naturally constructed lodging, three hearty, organic meals daily. (Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the aircrete workshop)
