Press release from Klippensteins law firm
Appeal from the Mayan Sipacapan People of Western Guatemala for Northamerican Solidarity, Confronted with Goldcorp Inc.'s Push to Expand Mining, Backed by the Guatemalan Army and Police, into Sipacapan Territories. Across Guatemala, and in San Marcos, campesino and Mayan peoples are protesting the illegal granting of a 23 square kilometer exploration license to Goldcorp (EntreMares)
Due to impunity and corruption in Guatemala, and impunity and a fundamental lack of political will in Canada, Goldcorp is held accountable nowhere for any harms and violations, and pushes relentlessly to expand its most profitable mine. Guatemalans are left with no choice, but to peacefully put their lives on the line, and physically block roads.
Goldcorp Inc. retains a 40% ownership control over Tahoe Resources. Tahoe Resources was founded by Kevin MacArthur, its CEO, after he stepped down from being the CEO of Goldcorp. MacArthur oversaw the development of Goldcorp’s most profitable mine worldwide, the “Marlin Mine”, that since 2004 has caused widely documented health and environmental harms, human rights violations and repression in Mayan Mam territories in western Guatemala.
Election results are often contested, and that is one reason why governments sometimes invite official observer missions from inter-governmental bodies such as the Organization of American States (OAS) or European Union (EU). But there are times and places when these outside organizations don't provide much in the way of independent observation.
