POLICE AND MILITARY RAID THE NATIONAL AUTONOMOUS UNIVERSITY OF HONDURAS

http://www.defensoresenlinea.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1257:policias-y-militares-allanan-otra-vez-la-unah&catid=54:den&Itemid=171

Police special force COBRAS and military elements threw large quantities of tear gas on to the UNAH campus then entered the property. Dozens of police and military have again raided the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH), where thousands of students are receiving classes. Students had taken over the boulevard bordering UNAH when the repressive forces proceeded to remove them and they took refuge within the educational institution, where they were followed by agents. This is the fourth time this kind of repression has taken place. The last time was on the 5th of September when the police took control of the university campus in the early morning and captured union members Cristian David Durón Durón and Antonio López Mendoza, who were sent to court in an effort to criminalize their labour struggle.

Members of the police's special force COBRAS as well as military elements first threw large quatities of tear gas onto the campus, then entered the property. Many students fainted, vomited, and suffered other reactions due to the tear gas.

No university authority protested these actions. Each time that the regime has raided UNAH it has been claimed that the raid was requested by the university rector Julieta Castellanos. It has also been reported that students from Francisco Morazán National Teaching University (UNPNFM) as well as striking teachers were repressed at protests today.

The police were reportedly entering homes in the neighbourhoods of Tres Caminos, Luís Landa, and El Hogar, where people who were being chased by the police and army had taken refuge. Many homeowners gave shelter to those who were pursued.

During the previous three days of repressed peaceful protests various people reported that they had been threatened by police for protecting those who sought refuge in their homes.

DE FACTO REGIME VIOLATES UNIVERSITY AUTONOMY

Wednesday March 23, 2011

Various wounded reported

In accordance with orders by the de facto regime to supress any popular demonstrations, the police and military savagely attacked students of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) who were demanding respect for public education.

Using large numbers of tear gas bombs and without warning, hundreds of officers attacked students who were holding a rally in front of the main site of the public university in Tegucigalpa.

University autonomy violated

Military and police entered into the higher education centre in an act that disrespects the guaranteed autonomy of the UNAH and repeats the actions of the dictatorship in 2009 which was headed by Roberto Michelletti.

The repressive forces entered the university property throwing tear gas bombs against buildings where students who had nothing to do with the attack were receiving classes. Professors and administrative personnel called local radio stations to denouce the agression of the dictatorship against human rights.

At least two students were taken to a nearby hospital for emergency attention after being assaulted by the riot police.

Subject: Honduras: Police are currently surrounding and gassing COPEMH building

After speaking with Carlos Amador (member of the Siria Valley Environmental Committee & a teacher) that was inside COPEMH last night when the police began shooting tear gas inside, he gave me the following information:

Police showed up at roughly 8:30 and shot over 10 canisters of tear gas inside COPEMH. At 9:30, Dina Meza from COFADEH showed up & everyone managed to get out of the building. Everyone was affected by the tear gas but no one was seriously injured.

The teachers are protesting again today. Right now they are leaving from IMPREMA and heading to the Presidential House.

About an hour ago, police again (accompanied by the military) started again to shoot tear gas & evict the teachers that were gathered in front of IMPREMA.  Both the National University & Teaching University were occupied this morning by students. Right now, the National University is in chaos. At about the same time they began evicting teachers in front of IMPREMA, police entered the University shooting tear gas. Based on reports right now, various people fainted, some are injured & at least 2 students have been detained.

This is the fifth consecutive day of mass repression against the teachers & the resistance.
