In 2011, Goldcorp CEO Chuck Jeannes received US$11.4 million for his work for Goldcorp; much of this was based on "performance" criteria. On July 14-15, an International Health Tribunal will take place in San Miguel Ixtahuacan, Guatemala, in the shadow of Goldcorp's "Marlin" mine. People from Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico will give testimony as to the health harms and other human rights violations they have suffered due to the operations of Goldcorp mines in their regions.
Assuredly the health harms and other human rights violations Goldcorp is causing are not considered when assessing the CEO's "performance".

Jeannes' base salary was only $1,415,540 and, according to the company's management information circular which is prepared for the company's annual general meeting, the base salary is expected to make up only about 14 per cent of his overall pay, the bulk of which will be in shares. He also received a bonus of $1,633,833 as well as pension value and other compensation. In 2011, Jeannes received 55,000 restricted share units (RSUs) worth about $2.7 million, 120,000 share options valued at $1.7 million and 623,000 performance share units (PSUs), worth $3.3 million. OVERVIEW
On July 14th and 15th, 2012, affected community members, scientists, academics, spiritual leaders, journalists and human rights advocates will come together to carry out an ethical, political and community-driven tribunal. This mechanism was developed to address the health and social impact of Canadian mining company Goldcorp, Inc. with specific attention to three cases:
- The Marlin Mine operating in San Miguel Ixtahuacán, Guatemala
- The San Martín Mine until recently operating in Valle de Siria, Honduras
- The Los Filos Mine operating in Carrizalillo, Mexico
OUR JUDGES
Our jury members are distinguished individuals with a diversity of backgrounds/ experiences, including activists, scholars, religious leaders, journalists, and medical professionals from the United States, El Salvador, Chile, Guatemala, and Mexico.
AREA OF FOCUS
The tribunal is focused on analyzing the behaviour and impact of the Marlin mine in Guatemala, the Los Filos mine in Mexico and the San Martín Mine in Honduras. The international jury will deliberate on the following questions:
- How has Goldcorp affected health and wellbeing of the communities in question?
- Does Goldcorp have the social license to operate in these particular communities?

And further, to consider the role/responsibility of the company and state-governments, in particular:
- What has been the response of the government and the company to the issue presented?
- What role have the local, municipal and federal Guatemalan authorities and the Canadian government played in relation to the company?
- What are the responsibilities of these institutions?

Alberto Rotondo, executive of Tahoe Mine, San Rafael in Guatemala , gave direct orders to assassinate members of the community San Rafael Las Flores. The investigation of the mining conflicts in San Rafael Las Flores, Santa Rosa , took a 180 degrees turn, after the Public Ministry submitted audio from wiretapping as evidence. In the audio it can be clearly heard how Alberto Rotondo, head of the San Rafael Mining Security outfit, ordered to assassinate opponents of the mine.
Tahoe Resources / Goldcorp Inc. is partnered with the Guatemalan military, headed by President Otto Perez Molina, who – as a former General in the Guatemalan Army – was recently named in the Genocide Trial as an intellectual author of some of the atrocities in the Mayan Ixil region of Guatemala. The Guatemalan regime – with huge military presence – has declared a State of Siege in a region where Tahoe and Goldcorp are violently trying to open another gold mine.
Canadian mining company Goldcorp has left over 20 toxic sites at current and former mines in Guatemala , Honduras , Mexico and Canada , among other places. Join us to help protest their legacy of toxic waste at their annual shareholder meeting at the Trump Hotel in Toronto . We will cordon off a hazardous zone around the meeting to highlight the serious threats that Goldcorp has posed to the communities where it has operated, ranging from health harms due to blood poisoning, to respiratory problems, food insecurity, water quality issues, violent and deadly attacks against community members, cracked houses and mental health problems. We will have masks and other safety gear on hand to protect Torontonians from the extreme levels of toxicity that Goldcorp brings wherever it goes.
Even as Tahoe / Goldcorp push ahead, even as repression increases, community after community are holding public, transparent consultations and every single one is saying ‘no’ to the imposition of this type of “development” project.
- Amed men fired bullets at not-for-profit organization, and broke into home of lawyer challenging the legality of mining license granted to Tahoe/Goldcorp.
- Tahoe/Goldcorp accused of operating an illegal armed group carrying out illegal actions against the civilian population.
