Day 28 of Honduran Coup Resistance
July 26, 2009, Alert #35
URGENT ACTION: WITCH-HUNT OF LEADERS CONTINUES, … MORE TARGETTED ILLEGAL DETENTIONS
Now is the time to call and call and call your members of parliament, congress members, senators, and media ...
Similar to yesterday’s illegal detention of Rafael Alegria, and dozens more, the military regime of Honduras has illegally detained various leaders of the National Front Against the Coup (Frente Nacional Contra el Golpe), including Berta Caceres and Salvador Zuniga (leaders of COPINH - Counsel of Indigenous and Popular Organizations), and Miriam Miranda, indigenous-garifuna leader and member of OFRANEH (Fraternal Organization of Black and Garifuna Peoples).
Salvador Zuniga and Miriam Miranda are members of President Zelaya’s commission that was in Costa Rica and participated in the dialogues, mediated by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, with the military regime headed by Robert Micheletti.
Since 1998, Rights Action has supported and worked with COPINH and OFRANEH on a wide range of issues.

COFADEH (COMMITTEE OF FAMILY MEMBERS OF THE DISAPPEARED IN HONDURAS) HAS DENOUNCED:
Campesino, indigenous leaders Salvador Zúniga and Bertha Cáceres, and Garifuna-indigenous leader Miriam Miranda were captured by Honduran soldiers at a military roadblock, near the city of El Paraíso, as they were walking to the “Las Manos” border crossing with Nicaragua.
It is reported that army and para-military patrols are marching in the mountains and forests of this southern region of Honduras, near the Nicaraguan border, looking for people who are marching peacefully to the border area to support the right to return of President Zelaya.
At this moment, it is not sure where Zúniga, Cáceres and Miranda are, it might be that they are being detained in police holding cells in the city of El Paraíso.

We will be updating regularly on this, and the many other on-going stories of repression against the pro-democracy, pro-Zelaya movement.
This pro-democracy struggle is of and for Hondurans, and of and for the peoples of the Americas. Clearly beyond any possible short-term solution, this is a harsh and extraordinary on-going struggle led by the Honduran people peacefully taking to the streets, risking death, detention and further impoverishment.
